Fundamentals of Power to Transform:
As manager,
Eckhart Wintzen had a very obstinate opinion on how companies must grow, and a strong aversion to bureaucracy. The so-called “cell theory” implies that employees perform better when working in smaller units, having their own responsibilities. Wintzen transformed the autonomous automation department at GTE (BSO) with a few dozen employees into one of the biggest players in the Netherlands. The growth principle was as ingenious as it was simple: every branch had to operate independently. When the number of employees exceeded 65, a new branch was opened, or, in BSO terms, “cell division”.
