Social Commitment

Commitment far beyond the office walls
As a consultancy bureau, it is important for MÖBIUS that the knowledge acquired by the company and its employees does not stay locked up  within its office walls but is passed on to its clients. Because we also lend importance to the transfer of knowledge beyond the professional  domain, we have opted to support a different kind of ‘knowledge transfer’ in the form of a good cause: ‘Amigos de Picos’.

Friends of Picos
Amigos de Picos focuses both on providing individual assistance in the form of scholarships as well as infrastructural support for schools. They  ensure that children who, due to their social background would normally not have the opportunity, are able to acquire the knowledge needed to  develop their qualifications and expertise to be of service to their community. This is not only of benefit for the children and their families but creates hope and perspectives for the entire village.

It all began with Antonio
Amigos de Picos began in 1992 as a small-scale initiative set up by two Belgians (Kristien Devos and Gunther Schollaert) who at the time went to live in the favela ‘Cato Vento’ in Brazil. Their neighbour’s son, Antonio, suddenly fell ill and was in need of urgent medical care. However, his parents did not have the means to call a doctor for him. Kristien and Gunther were so taken aback that they decided to intervene and pay the  doctor’s costs. When the boy later proved to be highly gifted, they again came to his aid, giving him the money for a scholarship.

Antonio quickly developed into a model student who completed his secondary studies with verve and in 2006 moved on to higher education. His boyhood dream had come true and he registered at the Universidade do Rio Grande de Norte and began his studies in medicine.  In order to provide the best possible assistance to Antonio, genuine fundraising activities were launched, the full proceeds of which went to the  project. The various campaigns turned out to be a huge success.

Bit by bit, more funds became available to award scholarships to 2 other children – Agnaldo & Simone - as well. The surplus of money went towards the modernisation of the primary school Colégio Sagrado do Coraçao de Jesus (CSCJ). The funding is used to purchase tables, chairs and air-conditioning.

Antonio an Agnaldo continue their medicine studies with a lot of determination and success. Simone is starting a psychology training.

MÖBIUS supports Amigos de Picos
Since the end of 2007, MÖBIUS has offered valuable support for this great initiative. At the end of each year, we deliver a Christmas present in the form of a sizeable donation to this non-profit organisation. With this additional funding, ‘Amigos de Picos’ is able to award more scholarships and continue to improve the school’s facilities.

Computers have been installed in the classrooms of the CSCJ. All the children in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade can now follow IT classes. That way, children who do not progress to secondary school have at least come into contact with PCs and the internet while those pupils who do continue their studies no longer get left behind. Of course, no computer lessons without internet, electricity and a dedicated part time teacher.

Last but not least, 2 young girls - Jackeline and Juliana – received a scholarship. Jackeline lives in very poor circumstances, not only her home is very basic, also her mother lives and works in difficult situations. She is not capable of giving a lot of support to her two children, although she does a lot of effort with the best intention. Jackeline seems to be very creative and has top-notes for all creative courses.

Juliana had a lot of difficulties in the public nursery school. As she's rather timid, she really had to fight to 'survive'. Now that she started in the CCSJ, she revives again.

Both Juliana and Jackeline receive quite some special attention – the attention they might be missing at home - from the CSCJ teachers.  Once again, the teachers show that we have made a good decision to support this school ; they are very committed to support our students. For more information click here.
